DCAT Honors Nobel Laureate Frances H. Arnold with Student Scholarship at DCAT Week in New York City

Robbinsville, NJ, USA  March 28, 2019 – The Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association (DCAT) is proud to announce that in honor of Dr. Frances H. Arnold, the 2018 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, the DCAT organization will award a $10,000 scholarship at the 2019 Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona on May 16, 2019. The recipient, chosen by DCAT’s Science & Scholarship Committee, will be a senior, student finalist at the fair, planning to major in chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering or biochemistry at their chosen college or university.

Dr. Frances H. Arnold, who gave the DCAT Week Keynote Address on Tuesday, March 19 in New York City, is the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry and the Director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center at the California Institute of Technology. “The DCAT organization wanted to honor Dr. Arnold for her outstanding contributions and to thank her for giving the keynote address at our annual flagship event,” said DCAT Executive Director Margaret M. Timony. “I can’t think of a better way than to support the next generation of scientists. Intel ISEF is the perfect venue to find a deserving senior student who demonstrates the enthusiasm, skills and work ethic to successfully pursue a degree related to one of the fields influenced by Dr. Arnold’s work.”

Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, bringing together approximately 1,800 high school students from around the globe to showcase their independent research and compete for an average of $5 million in total prizes. Since becoming an Intel ISEF Special Awards Organization in 2016, the DCAT organization has awarded over $24,000 in scholarships to finalists whose outstanding projects are related to human health in areas such as chemistry, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering. In addition, DCAT has contributed to the ISEF Education Outreach program that brings thousands of local students, many from underserved communities and schools, to view the exhibits and participate in hands-on science activities.
