Global Purchasing & Supplier Management
Jerry Davis, Director of Purchasing and Supplier Management, Baxter Healthcare
Presented on Thursday, November 5, 2009 as part of the Senior Sourcing Executive Roundtable at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, New Brunswick, NJ.
Davis opened his discussion with a look at Baxter’s goals and strategic principles, reporting structure and the five C’s for procurement success: contract compliance, cost (price) management, controls, consumption management, and communication.
He then took a closer look at strategy goals and Baxter’s manufacturing strategy to meet those goals.
During his discussion of best practices, Davis emphasized that the key to success was—communication, clear ownership and accountability, well documented processes and a team based approach are attributes that can make supplier management a competitive advantage.
He ended his presentation of the affect that current economic uncertainties, regulatory pressures, and innovation have on Baxter’s Global Purchasing and Supply Management.
Economic uncertainties in the global economy are driving cost management activity. (Dramatic economic, regulatory, and environmental events affecting Baxter's suppliers of medical
grade materials.)
Regulatory pressures are driving system and portfolio management activity. (Global alignment with Baxter Quality organization to manage and improve supplier performance in production and delivery of material and services.)
Innovation and business expansion are driving the PDP Design process. (Increasing demand to support the growth of Baxter new products with innovation from current suppliers or alternative sourcing strategies.)
